The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), a lobby group in Washington DC has gone on the offensive against McDonald’s.
They’ve produced a graphic commercial (the Youtube clip is embedded below) that portrays a woman weeping over a man in a morgue (in a deft little touch, the man is holding a half eaten hamburger).
The broader fastfood industry and McDonald’s are, of course, outraged. The Guardian reports that a McDonald’s spokesman said: “This commercial is outrageous, misleading and unfair to all consumers. McDonald’s trusts our customers to put such outlandish propaganda in perspective, and to make food and lifestyle choices that are right for them.”
This is about FREE speech though. Yes, McDonald’s – the weight of evidence shows – is not food that does a human much good if consumed regularly. However, regardless, the PCRM has EVERY right to make this type of commercial and air it. Hopefully this right is protected by various levels of government if McDonald’s pursues legal action against PCRM – a real possibility.
The PR line quoted above is also interesting. McDonald’s has to respond in this manner – they have no choice. This is because, in the same way all smokers know cigarettes are bad (but smoke them anyway) most folks know that, consumed regularly, McDonald’s fast food is likely going to have serious health consequences. People eat this crap anyway for a variety of reasons (i.e. economics, time crunch, because they’ve always done it, etc). But, despite what everyone knows to be true (either via science or via how they feel after consuming a Big Mac and a large fries) the company spin must persist…
What do you think about this commercial?
